Plot

A convicted murderer on Death Row and the nun who befriends him. During WWII in England, Charlie, Carrie, and Paul Rawlins are sent to live with Eglantine Price, an apprentice witch. Charlie blackmails Miss Price that if he is to keep her practices a secret, she must give him something, so she takes a bedknob from her late father's bed and places the "famous magic traveling spell" on it, and only Paul can activate it. Their first journey is to a street in London where they meet Emelius Browne, headmaster of Miss Price's witchcraft training correspondence school. Miss Price tells him of a plan to find the magic words for a spell known as Substitutiary Locomotion, which brings inanimate objects to life. This spell will be her work for the war effort.

In August of 1940 in the English village of Pepperinge Eye, three cockney orphans are sent to live with Eglantine Price, who is studying to become an apprentice witch. When she receives a letter from the Correspondence College of Witchcraft in London, she and the children fly on a bed (by way of a magic bedknob) to London to meet the headmaster of the defunct school, Emelius Brown. The saga of rural southerners trying to stay on the land continues unabated since industrialization. Tobacco Road is a wonderful illustration of this struggle, and has many subplots that only a mature viewer would appreciate. Jeeter Lester was a complicated person - he was willing to steal from his own family, but we admire his steely determination to save the farm. Idleness had acclimated him to leisure, and laziness now marked his days. And desperation had acclimated him to dishonesty as a way to get along. The Lesters were brutal, and they were brutalized. They were sinners and saints. If it weren't for Charley Grapewin's upbeat performance, the movie would have taken on the aura of a dark comedy at best, if not an outright tragedy. Which is exactly what the story was - a tragedy wrapped in the cloak of a comedy. It has often been said that the line between tragedy and comedy is the finest thread. I think Ford does a good job of keeping the cloak of comedy on, with occasional glimpses of the "inside" story. Then ending is perfect, for it leaves the laughing child viewer with an assumed happy ending, thinking that it all worked out and they lived happily ever after. But the mature viewer knows that the ending is sad, because the benevolence of the wealthy friend only prolongs the inevitable. I recommend this movie for both the amusement seeker and the serious thinker.

Review Summary

The second of Universal's "Ma and Pa Kettle" series, Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town stars, as ever, Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride. This time, the Kettles win a letter-writing contest, which offers as first prize an all-expense-paid trip to New York City. Once in Manhattan, the huge Kettle brood raises all sorts of Holy Ned, culminating in an episode involving stolen bank money. Somehow this all ends with a riotous, slapstick-laden square dance. The film's romantic subplot is handled by Richard Long as oldest son Tom Kettle and Meg Randall as his high-society wife Kim. Also carried over from the first Kettle entry are Ray Collins and Barbara Brown as the Kettle's wealthy in-laws. MA AND PA KETTLE BACK ON THE FARM was the fourth film in the series and it's one of the best, with a number of laugh-out-loud lines and hilarious knockabout humor. The Kettles become grandparents as the film opens - endearing idiot Pa learning Ma is at the hospital and that "Mrs. Kettle" is expecting believes Ma is the one with child! The blessed event brings daughter-in-law Kim's parents to town and Ma immediately clashes with the haughty Mrs. Parker who proceeds to boss the whole Kettle household around, lays down the rules for interaction with the baby, and even decides to name the child over Tom and Kim's decision!! When the bickering gets too intense and threatens Tom and Kim's marriage, Ma decides to Pa and her and the kids will move back to the family's dilapidated rural house for a spell while the Parkers stay in the KETTLES fancy city home. Back home, Pa and local huckster Billy discover uranium on the homestead - and so do a couple of petty crooks from the big city.

This entry has some of the funniest lines in the series and Pa's "14 goes into 25" skit is an unheralded gem that is funnier than Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First" classic sketch. Mrs. Parker is a rather over the top caricature of a snooty city woman although Barbara Brown gives a good performance in the role. Her tirade against the Kettles Indian friends though is rather offensive even for the era though.though I loved Crowbar's retort when Pa informs him aristocratic Mrs. Parker's "ancestors came over on the Mayflower." "Hmmmph," says Crowbar, "that nothing. Mine there to greet them!"

Plot
